Tokyo Garden Party #4 @ Mori No Beer Garden August 5th, 18:30-20:30

The fourth TGP of the season will be at the Mori No Beer Garden. A very nice beer garden which is now virtually impossible to get into unless you have seats books months beforehand, which is what we did.

Tokyo Garden Party is a networking event for the creative and business community. Please enjoy a cold beer on a rooftop beer garden and meet new people.

There will be 60 seats available for Tokyo Garden Party. Come early, first come, first serve. We start at 18:30 sharp.

Tokyo Garden Party No. 1 for 2010

Come and join us and about 150 other interesting types on the roof of the Tokyu Honten department store in Shibuya next week for the first edition of Tokyo Garden Party for 2010.

'TGP' is a joint production of fusionbureau and SET Japan which is intended to bring people working in the Tokyo creative industry together for casual networking at (mainly) rooftop beer gardens over the summer months. There are no formal presentations or order of ceremonies, just turn up and pay for the beer and food you eat and meet some people. The focus is creative, but all are welcome.

If you came along last year, you may be in for a small surprise as since our last event in September 2009 the legend has been growing. We're expecting this to be almost twice the size of any previous event.

See you on the roof!

Details:
Date: Thursday, June 10th, 2010
Time: 19:00 - 21:30
Place: 'Green Garden' beer garden on top of the Tokyu Honten department store in Shibuya (near Don Quixote and above Bunkamura)

Japanese architects Sejima and Nishizawa win the Pritzker Prize

Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa have won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The award is sometimes called the 'Nobel Prize' for architecture. The stature of the award can be seen from past winners who include Rem Koolhas, Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Renzo Piano and Herzog & de Meuron as well as fellow Japanese architects Tadao Ando and Kenzo Tange.

New York Times Article: http://nyti.ms/d0FkPT

fusionbureau profiled one of Sejima's smaller works built recently near our office in Minami-Aoyama earlier this year.

Poster Design YTG 39 performance

We have just sent off the poster design for a new theatre play by Yokohama Theatre artistic director Andrew Woolner.

*39* is a devised play about a man (who we know only as '39') who goes into space for six years, but due to the effects of traveling close to the speed of light, returns to Earth after 39 years have passed.

*39* is currently being rehearsed and created by Kimberly Tierney (director)
and Andrew Woolner (actor and writer). The show will be presented at least
five times in Japan, United Kingdom and Canada:

Yokohama (March 27& 28, 2010)
London, Ontario at the Fringe Festival (June 17 - 27, 2010)
Tokyo (July, 2010)
Edmonton Fringe (August, 2010)
Victoria Fringe (August 26 - September 5, 2010)

In each of these cities the play will change. Andrew will be working with a
different supporting actor in each venue. Each supporting actor will be
playing a different character from the life of 39.

The show will involve text, movement, and multimedia elements (including
sound scapes, created by composer Eric Rubio). The scenes will be presented
in a non-chronological way, following the themes of the play, rather than
the timeline.

micro lending from tokyo to mali

fusionbureau often helps foreign companies in Japan with visual identity, business development, competitive analysis, localization and their online presence. So it was interesting to find out we also could help individuals develop their business ideas across the globe through the Kiva person-to-person micro-lending service.

By lending a small amount of money these entrepreneurs can invest and be self-sustaining, thus lifting them out of the poverty loop. This is a direct result of how internet has initiated a paradigm shift from a limited amount of big players, to a mass market of small players. Yahoo still used the old advertising model, but Google understood that it's better to attract millions of small budgets, and have customers manage their own distribution channels. Systems should be scalable and flexible to allow end users to find their own applications.

Kiva is interesting in two ways. Not only does it help small entrepreneurs invest in their future (too insignificant for financial institutions to be bothered), but it also shows how by building the right tools on internet people can solve their own problems. The platform is more powerful than pre-defined solutions. We will see this implemented in more areas such as education and collaborative tools.

So far Kiva has allowed us to lend a small amount to Susan's embroidery shop in Peru, and Saniya's food stall in Mali. This would have been impossible just a few years ago.

http://www.kiva.org
Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend to unique entrepreneurs around the globe.

designer sembei aoyama

Recently many new shops have opened between Koto Dori and Omotesando Station. One of the more interesting ones combines Japanese tradition with a modern ascetic style. Jukka sells rice crackers but presents it as designer jewelry, on a pedestal, under glass. The exquisite tea companions come in various shapes and ingredients. The shop offers free tasting if you would happen to pass by.

rooftop lunch with the artist in aoyama

For those looking for a rooftop lunch near Omotesando station, combined with the artwork of Yoshitomo Nara, head to the A to Z cafe.

The wooden baraque (shed, hut, stand, stall) is filled with delicious food and drawings of evil girls.

For those craving to see the Aoyama skyline, the towers of AO building, Prada, Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown, ask for seats on the rooftop. You might be granted access.
